THEY STARTED small. After getting naked and crawling into bed, and between make-out sessions, Charlie pulled up the gay country singer from before and played the video where he chased down a guy while holding an American flag out the window of a car. He played a few lesbian artists he also remembered, and some Rae Spoon he stumbled on in an adjacent playlist.
âI know her.â
âThem,â Charlie corrected. âIâm pretty sure Rae Spoon goes by they/them pronouns.â
âWell, Iâve heard them before,â Trevor said, still sounding the new pronouns out in his mind and mouth. âTheyâre pretty good. Though I think they do electronic stuff now.â
âI think so too. Iâm glad I donât need to introduce you to everything, as much as I like it.â Charlie scrolled through his iPad and challenged Trevor with a couple other contemporary artists who werenât only famous from the 1990s. Trevor, in spite of himself, continued to find certain songs or artists he enjoyed. The twanging of the guitars had a certain quaintness to it after a while. It was beautiful in the same way a field or forest was: simple and seemingly natural, easy to get lost in and forget where you were.
âI didnât mind that song,â Trevor said after a few minutes. âWho was that?â
âDierks Bentley. I like Vance Joy a fair bit. But okay, I think youâve humored me enough. Show me what you like now.â
Trevor rubbed his hands together gleefully as he scrolled through his iPod. He found his favorite albumâThe Usedâs first self-titled album he had discovered while in high schoolâand put on the track âGreener with the Scenery.â
âSo much screaming,â Charlie teased. âDefinitely the type of music I was telling you about before. But donât worry, I like it.â
âHereâs a different track. Less screaming, I promise.â Trevor put on âBlue and Yellowâ and caught Charlieâs fingers moving along, as if he was playing guitar or piano.
âDo you play?â
Charlie glanced down at his hand, stilling it. âOh, no. Nah.â
Trevor raised an eyebrow, challenging him.
âWell, when I was young. There used to be a beat-up guitar and a keyboard some of my sisters kept in the back of the attic. I know a little bit, but not much.â
âWhat happened to the instruments?â
âWent away,â Charlie said. He didnât elaborate any more, and though Trevor was struck by his tone, he decided not to press the issue. He scrolled through his iPod and played the Sneaker Pimpsâs âLightning Fieldâ and a few others before moving on to VASTâs âPretty When You Cryâ and one of his favorite one-hit wonders and guilty pleasures.
âThis is Wheatus,â Trevor stated. âAnd I know this song is ridiculous, but I love how itâs a song about listening to music. About a favorite band. Here.â
Charlie listened carefully, nodding along to some of the lyrics. âI know this. It was in a movie, right?â
âRight, it was in Loser. Not a good movie, but it was there. I liked the song before the film.â
âOf course you did.â Charlie nudged him, but drew quiet until the song finished.
